Reversi — Foundations: read the board before moving

Four studies in legal moves and their immediate effects. Make a prediction, test it, and compare the starting-position answer.

Print these four studies with answers

Use a prediction, a test and a reason

  1. Read the task before opening the answer. Say where a move lands or what it changes.
  2. Test it on the playable board. In two-player studies, play both sides to inspect a reply.
  3. Undo and compare one alternative. Use the answer’s stated search limit when explaining the result.
  4. Repeat the decision on paper, where the move cannot be checked for you automatically.

These are teaching groups, not a player-tested difficulty ladder. The four board IDs match the technique examples, individual study pages and print pack.

Bracket before counting

Violet to move. Find a legal square, then identify every bracketed line it flips. Which available move flips the most discs in this position? This is a counting exercise, not a recommendation.

Count every captured line

Violet to move. Find a legal square, then identify every bracketed line it flips. Which available move flips the most discs in this position? This is a counting exercise, not a recommendation.

A stable corner is available

Violet to move. Which legal moves occupy a corner? Compare them with a non-corner capture and identify any corner replies you would give away.

Bring the idea to a fresh round

Capture legality, legal-move counts, corner stability, passes and final counts can be checked exactly. Mobility and avoiding access to an empty corner are strategic considerations, not universal winning rules. More legal moves, more current discs or ownership of a corner does not alone prove a final win. The regular game is local two-player play; example analysis is not an unannounced computer opponent or a claim of perfect strategy.
